I rather like them, and they’re DIRT cheap. I currently have a 2002 Jeep WJ Overland with 150k-ish miles. It’s in fantastic shape and I’ve only had it since last spring. But with a baby, the WJ sure feels tiny all of a sudden... The thought of next summer coming and having to cram 2 adults, a baby and all of the baby-related accessories and 2 dogs into the WJ and hitching up the 24' travel trailer seems... unappealing. As James May would say, “You’ve bought the wrong car.”
I’d probably be buying one in the 150-200k mile range for sub-$5,000. I’m sure it’ll need a little lovin’, but these trucks seem to have solid bones.
The WJ, as seen on the Pacific Coast Highway:

I don’t have any experience with them, but I like them a lot.
Especially in black
I’ve ridden a fair amount in GMT400s and I think that’s the generation I’d have, but I’d go for the probably much safer GMT800 with a kid

I don’t mind the GMT 400, and the Vortec 350 is a great mill, but the 5.3 is just so much better. I’ve spent a bit of time around other GMT 800s, and they’re waaaaay comfier, too IMO.

Can’t tell you anything about it other than that I really want one and I’m a die-hard Euro car guy so yeah. Truly appeals across the aisle IMO. I also prefer how Suburbans look over Tahoes; the longer body lends itself well to the rectangular looks. They’re basically modern American wagons and that’s awesome.

Ooh ! Sometimes I forget that I own one ! Mine has been decently reliable though it’s had some electrical gremlins recently. I think it’s just a bad window regulator messing up the lot of it. Pretty solid truck though. Very safe too. I was in a roll over in one a few years back and walked away from it, though that could be down to landing in 3 feet of powderey snow. I think mine is starting to rust though so I might start looking for a Land Cruiser or G wagon once my S600 is payed off.

I have no idea if they are good or not, but they look nice. I think Suburban looks like overkill for a 1-baby family. I have 3 kids (but no dogs) and my 4Runner is plenty big. At the same time, having a 24' trailer to tow might be reason enough to get something bigger.

My GMT-800 truck, an ‘06 Sierra crew cab, has been very reliable. I’ve had it since new. You should have no trouble finding a good one for under $5k. Watch for rust on the rockers, and make sure the driver’s seat is in good condition, as those are getting harder to source.

The wheelbase is also longer, so they ride a lot better than Tahoe. I’ve taken both on highway trips and the Burban is noticeable more comfortable. Seriously the only justification for buying a Tahoe instead is if the suburban is too long for your garage or driveway.

The interiors are crap (comfy, but everything rattles and falls apart) and they can develop lots of weird little problems above 100,000 miles - one guy I know with one has a different warning message every day that is a false alarm. But they run strong, are comfy, and obviously very spacious. The long wheelbase makes them good tow vehicles. You don’t get gold-flat seating like in more modern SUV’s though. But they are the last generation that can be had with barn doors which I personally prefer to a liftgate on something so big.

Agreed, and I’ve always made fun of people who buy massive cars to carry one kid. But, most everything feels cramped when you’re 6'7", and there will be more kids!

Styling wise I think they are my favorite gen Suburban/Tahoe, they are just great looking trucks.
Reliability wise I would be very surprised if they are anything but rock solid. They surely aren’t very technically advanced cars, I wouldn’t know whats supposed to wrong with them apart from the usual wear and tear that comes with a vehicle of this age. Fuel economy might be a whole different story though.

Yeah... fuel economy is not a concern.
